Depression Evaluation Service

Founded in 1977, the DEPRESSION EVALUATION SERVICE (DES) is an outpatient research and treatment clinic that conducts studies of the cause and treatment of depression. Within the context of research studies, the DES offers free treatment with antidepressant medications for depressed men and women between the ages of 18 and 75. The DES has locations in uptown Manhattan (at NY State Psychiatric Institute, on the campus of Columbia University Medical Center) and in midtown Manhattan, near Columbus Circle.

Nationally recognized for its research into the biology and treatment of depression, the DES has conducted dozens of studies of medication and psychotherapy, has published over 150 papers, and has received over 30 grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), public and private agencies and foundations, and pharmaceutical companies, to study both new and established drugs for depression.

Current studies at the DES include:

(1) An innovative NIMH-funded study of combining standard antidepressants to accelerate response and increase the rate of full recovery

(2) A study of MRI brain imaging and medication treatment of dysthymia, a chronic form of depression

(3) Studies using brain imaging and physiologic tests to understand which depressed patients are likely to benefit from particular antidepressant medications

(4) A study investigating the utility of a standard antidepressant (duloxetine) for chronic depression

(5) A study of mood stabilizers in treatment of temper outbursts and irritable mood in children and young adults

(6) Studies examining treatments for HIV+ patients with fatigue and depression.
