The Brain Behavior Clinic (BBC) is dedicated to investigating and innovating safe and effective treatments for psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, Tourette’s syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and cerebral palsy. Located at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Medical Center, the BBC provides treatment to eligible individuals by a specialized staff of psychiatrists, social workers and nurses at no cost to the patient.

Recent technological advances have made a variety of new interventions for modulating brain function available. It is these therapies that are being investigated at our Service. Some examples of experimental therapies offered by the BCC include:

• Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)
• Deep Brain Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS)
• Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST)
• Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)
• Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
• Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES)
• Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Our staff of specialists is involved in the latest research on the brain and its relationship to various psychiatric disorders. Using brain imaging, neuropsychological testing and the analysis of appropirate electrophysiological and biochemical signatures of illness and treatment response, we hope to understand both the causes and treatments of psychiatric illness.  Our program is part of the Division of Experimental Therapeutics, headed by Dr. Daniel C. Javitt, affording us the opportunity to combine the latest in brain stimulation treatments with the most innovative biochemical approaches to the treatment of psychiatric illness.
