The mission of the Suicide Intervention Center at NYSPI, a federally-funded Developing Center on Interventions for the Prevention of Suicide, is to promote, develop, and conduct efficacy studies that test and adapt pharmacologic, psychosocial, and combined interventions for individuals at high risk for suicide and suicide attempts, across diagnostic and stage of life categories. The Center develops and tests state of the art interventions and treatment for the prevention of suicidal behavior and reduction of suicide risk. Methods and measures relevant to interventions with suicidal individuals are also developed and evaluated.
The Center’s work is designed to improve identification of high risk individuals in the community and their engagement in treatment, as well as to stimulate clinically-sound and ethical inclusion of individuals at high risk for suicide in intervention studies. The Center performs consultations with clinicians and researchers to develop clinically and ethically sound intervention studies for suicidal individuals, assessment tools to evaluate change in suicidal risk over time, and safety monitoring procedures for suicidal individuals engaged in treatment protocols.
Suicide Intervention Center faculty members are nationally and internationally known experts in the field of suicide treatment and prevention, including Center Director Barbara Stanley, PhD, and co-Director, Maria Oquendo, MD.
