GENERAL CLINICAL RESEARCH SERVICES

The General Clinical Research Service is a 12 bed, adult inpatient unit which functions dually as an intensive treatment ward and a training site for social work students, 2nd year residents in psychiatry, as well as students in occupational and recreational therapies, psychiatric nursing, and medicine.

Patients are admitted to a specific research protocol and then offered a full range of clinical and research services. There are currently several distinct research projects on the GCRS for:
1) Individuals with anorexia nervosa.
2) Individuals with bulimia nervosa.
3) Individuals who have suffered major depression with suicidal or self mutilating
behaviors.
4) Individuals who have been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

Patients are treated clinically by a multi-disciplinary team offering a full range of therapeutic services including individual, group, family, recreational and occupational therapies. The primary responsibilities of the social workers on this unit are individual casework, family therapy and disposition planning. Disposition planning focuses on the needs of the patient after discharge, including outpatient referrals, aftercare services and other concrete needs. Thorough evaluations and psychosocial assessments are necessary to ascertain the treatment approach to each individual. In addition, social workers are actively involved in the group therapy program.
