Depression Treatment Research Program

Purpose and Orientation

The Depression Evaluation Service is an outpatient research and treatment program in operation since 1977. Our program is nationally recognized for its research in the treatment of depression and has received numerous grants from the National Institute of Mental Health. The Depression Evaluation Service conducts studies of anti-depressant medications to promote knowledge of these disorders and to identify methods for matching specific treatments to different forms of depressive disorders.

Patient Evaluation and Treatment

After a brief telephone screening, interested patients have a detailed interview with a staff clinician. The next appointment is with a research psychiatrist for a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Treatment may be initiated for eligible patients at this time. All treatment is conducted by fully trained psychiatrists who hold teaching appointments at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Initial evaluation appointments are during daytime hours but evening appointments are available at all three sites for treatment visits.

Eligibility

Men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 who suffer from depression are eligible. Patients with alcohol abuse as well as depression can be treated in special programs available for these problems.

Medical Evaluation

Medical assessment is part of our comprehensive program. All patients are required to have a physical examination which can be arranged at either no cost or a modest cost, depending on the study. Other medical procedures including electrocardiogram and routine blood tests are done at no cost to patients.

Fees

All subsequent treatment, including psychiatric visits and medication, is free.
