Treatment of Suicidal Behavior and Self-Injury in Borderline Personality Disorder

This study provides Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), supportive psychotherapy, and/or fluoxetine (Prozac) to treat suicidal behavior and self-injury in outpatients with borderline personality disorder.

Eligibility:

bullet

Ages 18 to 50

bullet

 Meets criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder

bullet

Has a history of at least two suicide attempts and/or self-injury episodes (e.g., cutting, burning, head-banging, striking self, skin picking), with at least one occurring within the last five years and at least one in the last six months

bullet

Stable living arrangement

bullet

Not currently receiving optimal psychiatric treatment

bullet

Willing and judged to be clinically able to be washed out of psychotropic medications except for occasional benzodiazepine (e.g., Ativan) use for 2-6 weeks prior to treatment

bullet

Women cannot be pregnant and must be using an effective form of birth control
