MEDIA ADVISORY:

PROGRAM FOR OVERWEIGHT ADOLESCENTS ADDS
PARENTS TO THE EQUATION

WHO: Lisa Kotler, MD
Adolescent Eating Behavior Program

WHAT: Adolescents with eating behavior and weight problems

WHERE: New York State Psychiatric Institute
1051 Riverside Drive @ W. 165th St. (Exit 17, Henry Hudson Pkwy)

Overweight and obesity have become a major public health problem for adolescents in the United States. Although overweight is one of the easiest conditions to recognize, it has proven one of the most challenging to treat. While "weight loss camps" have been an option for many families, they take teens out of their natural environment, away from their families and the gains made while away are lost on the kids' return home.

A new research program at the NYS Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University Medical Center will soon be a resource for teens and their families who are battling the weighty issue of obesity.

Starting July 6, Dr. Lisa Kotler, a psychiatrist and eating behaviors expert, will lead a six week outpatient summer program for males and females age 12-16. Data has shown that one of the most important aspects of weight loss interventions for children involves parental involvement. Therefore, this program requires that families make the commitment along with their teens.

Participants will be offered a number of activities including group sessions for behavior therapy, physical activity and field trips designed to reinforce good nutrition.
