Annual International Conference Highlights Postpartum Depression

WHO: Margaret Spinelli, MD, Director of the Maternal Mental Health Program at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The horrendous nature of the Andrea Yates case and more recent incidents of postpartum distress have illuminated the need for intervention and more education about postpartum depression and other illnesses related to reproductive mental health. This two-day conference will feature a range of experts covering such topics as prevention and risk reduction, identification and assessment as well as treatment and support services.

On Friday, June 27 at 9:30 a.m., Dr. Margaret Spinelli will deliver the keynote speech titled The Promise of Saved Lives: Recognition, Prevention and Rehabilitation. Dr. Spinelli is editor of Infanticide: Psychosocial and Legal Perspectives on Mothers Who Kill, an educational tool for professionals working in the legal, social service, mental health or medical fields. She is also a noted expert in postpartum depression and psychosis and has testified in numerous court cases.
