Staff will promptly report all security-related incidents to the Safety & Security Department. 

  • Call extension 5555 immediately for emergencies, including

  • Call extension 5100 promptly to report other events, including

    • Discovery of theft

    • malfunctioning security-related systems

      • doors / locks

      • intrusion alarms

      • card-access devices

All staff are oriented and trained so as to be aware of security concerns and procedures. Anyone requiring additional information should contact the Safety & Security Department - in person at the main lobby desk, or by telephone at 543-5100.

The Psychiatric Institute is an agency of the State of New York. As such, its Safety & Security Officers  have special police training and powers to conduct investigations and take actions - including placing individuals under arrest -  in relation to all aspects of security at NYSPI. Additional resources from outside the Institute NYCPD, NYS Police, OMH Special Investigators, et al may be brought in as situations require. (In accord with Section 7.31 of the Mental Hygiene Law; OMH Policy Directives QA-510, QA-520 and QA-530.)

All staff will cooperate with, and follow directions of officers in any security-related event or investigation.

All such police actions and investigations are conducted in strict accordance with applicable laws, and - when needed - take into consideration the nature of our patient population. (See "Patients' Rights.)

Reports (on a scheduled or emergency basis) to the Environment of Care Committee and to the Administration will provide information as needed to correct deficiencies and prevent similar occurrences. 

Certain details of security (criminal) investigations will remain confidential. 

Trends will be monitored closely. 

The entire Security Management Program / Plan is evaluated at least annually.
